"Secret Love" A Tribute To Doris Day Starring Karen Oberlin, and Tedd Firth on Piano. Hosted by Gary Stevens

Gary Stevens first met Doris Day when he was in Cincinnati because Milt Stavin (spelling?) of Shapiro Bernstein Music told him about this wonderful new singer that he must hear. The ext time he saw Doris Day was at The Log Cabin in Armonk, NY. Gary was writing a story on Les Brown for the Metronome and Doris was singing with his band. Six months later he heard her sing again at The Hotel Pennsylvania in NY. She was in an unhappy marriage and asked Gary to recommend a good attorney, which he politely declined to do. Gary saw her perform at The Palladium Ballroom in LA the last night that she sang with Les Brown before going on her own. Doris was booked by Billy Reed at his popular boite, "The Little Club" for a run in New York and Sammy Cahn and Jules Styne were there. They asked her to audition for a role in a film that they were going to do in LA called, "Romance On The High Seas" and the rest is history. She got the role and became a star. Gary also recalled that in 1954 he and Frank DeVol were invited to Doris' home for what they thought was going to be a New Year's Party. They got there, and Doris was in her robe and fuzzy slippers and talked to them in her den (which Gary recalled had a soda fountain) and then she said good night and went up and off to bed. They waited around and no one showed up and they left and went on to another party. Ten years later, in 1964, Gary was with Jackie Susanne and Irving Mansfield and ran into Doris Day and asked her about that New Year's Eve party and what had happened. She didn't even remember the evening at all...but Gary certainly did! |
